Wow. There are so many things going on here: the gay, the glorious chest of Lucy Lawless, the gay, Gabrielle forgetting about the dumb boy immediately after nuzzling into the glorious chest of Xena. Just so much in this one scene.
I love it when the order in which things appear on your dash makes you go “d’awwwwwwwwww.”
Just look at Xena’s face when she realise Gabrielle isn’t dead and standing right in front of her

I was rewatching Callisto when this scene caught my attention.
This was such an important theme throughout the show, and that’s one of the main reasons I am so angry about the events of A Friend in Need. “They must be avenged?” Why does the need for forgiveness end when it’s Xena herself in need of forgiveness? The writers threw it all away for the belief that something must end tragically to be impressive.
Sorry for the rant.
I probably didn’t rewrite it well (it’s 5 A.M. and I can’t tell), but still. THIS IS MY HEADCANON, YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO CONVINCE ME THIS IS NOT HOW IT ENDED:
It was oddly numbing, being dead. Xena watched Gabrielle with what she was certain should’ve been an ever-increasing sickness in the pit of her stomach, yet she felt nothing. Her heart had stilled when she could have sworn that only moments ago, it hammered in her chest like a frantic bird throwing itself against her rib cage.
This body could not be her own, this light, unfeeling body, placid in the face of Gabrielle’s anguish. Tears welled in her eyes and grounded her. At least they were something of her own, something from before. From her life.
“But Xena,” Gabrielle said, her voice quivering, “that is not right.”
